How do I allow submissions of more than one file for a single summative assessment using Coursework?

Sometimes there will be a requirement for students to upload more than one file as part of a single assessment.

Depending on assessment requirements (specifically if Turnitin is required), you may need to create additional submission points to accommodate this.

The scenarios outlined below will help guide you around the configuration required to meet your needs.

Scenario 1: Turnitin is not required for any file submissions

If you don’t require a plagiarism check for any of the files that are being submitted by students then you can simply change this in the Coursework settings: How do I set up Coursework activities and assessment dropboxes if I don’t need to use Turnitin? – Digital Education Support at Brookes

Since you require more than one file to be submitted, you will need to increase the value in the ‘Maximum number of files that the student can submit’ setting:

Scenario 2*: Turnitin is required for one of the file submissions

The Coursework activity should be used for the file submission that needs to be checked by Turnitin.

For any other files required for submission, a Moodle assignment can be created and configured appropriately. Please refer to: How do I set up a Moodle Assignment in Moodle? – Digital Education Support at Brookes

Scenario 3*: Turnitin is required for more than one of the file submissions.

The Coursework activity should be used for one of the file submissions that needs to be checked by Turnitin. Please refer to: Which dropbox settings do I need to check in Coursework dropboxes?

If it’s appropriate to consider one of the file submissions as the ‘main’ contribution to the assessment and the other files as ‘supporting’ contributions, students should perhaps submit the ‘main’ contribution to the Coursework activity.

For each additional file submission which needs to be processed through Turnitin, create a Turnitin assignment: How do I set up a final submission in Turnitin?

You may also want to create a draft Turnitin dropbox so that your students can check their similarity score before their final submission: How do I set up a draft submission in Turnitin?

If an additional file submission – or file submissions – do not need to be processed through Turnitin, then add and configure a Moodle assignment for this process: How do I set up a Moodle Assignment in Moodle?

*Note: the automatically-generated individual deadlines for students with extensions and ISPs will only be applied to the Coursework activity. Extensions can be manually added to Moodle assignments using the ‘Override’ functionality. It is not possible to set individual deadlines for students using the Turnitin assignment activity.

Students with blue cards will also need to add these manually when submitting to a Moodle or Turnitin Assignment. For Coursework activities, the blue card should be added automatically by the system.
