Which dropbox settings do I need to check in Coursework dropboxes?

There should be one assessment submission dropbox per one gradable assessment component. For example, if you have 2 gradable assessment components (e.g. a Written assignment 50% and a Portfolio 50%), you should have 2 assessment submission dropboxes.

What do I need to do?

Once you see the assessment submission dropbox(es) in your module in Moodle, go to the Settings page of each ‘Coursework’ activity and check/amend the following settings before making the dropbox(es) visible to your students.

Important: ISP extensions
ISP (Individual Support Plan) extensions are only applied after the Deadline for submissions has been updated. For this reason, you must amend the Deadline for submissions at least once for each Coursework dropbox. Even if the deadline for submissions is correct, you will need to change it (you can always change it back to what it was originally).

Go to the ‘Settings’ page of your Coursework activity and check/amend the the following settings:

General

Coursework title

If you like, you can change this to something more appropriate. Otherwise, leave it as is.

Description

You can include information about the assessment or instructions to your students about the submission.

Availability

Start date

Set as appropriate.

This is the date from when your students will be able to start submitting their work.

Deadline for submissions

Set date and time as appropriate.

This is the date after which students won’t be able to submit work.
Note: students with extensions will have their own deadline.

This date and\or time must be changed at least once to trigger ISP extensions and apply them to the dropbox.

Submissions

Submission types

Check that the ‘Submission types’ is set as appropriate.

If ‘Submission types’ is Event marks input but you need your students to submit a supporting file, untick Event marks input and tick File submissions instead.

Rename files

In most cases, this should be set to No.

If set to Yes, files submitted by students will be renamed to support anonymity.
Set to Yes or No

Blind marking

Blind marking

Set to Yes or No

(default: Yes)

Feedback Types

Grade/feedback release date

This acts the same as the Turnitin Post Date, which is the date when grades and feedback will be visible to students when they open their submission in Turnitin Feedback Studio.

You MUST set the date as appropriate.

Note: if the date is greyed out, tick the box next to ‘Enable’ to activate it.

Group submission settings

There are two main workflows for the collecting and marking of Group work. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Please read: How do I set up and mark a Group work Assessment? to choose the approach that best suits your assessment.

The Coursework activity should have Group submissions set to ‘No’ to support individual grading and feedback.

Turnitin settings

Enable Turnitin

Set to Yes or No

(default: Yes)

If Turnitin is enabled (ie. Enable Turnitin = Yes), please consider adding a draft dropbox to your course so that students can check the similarity score of their submission. When submitting their final work to the Coursework dropbox, students are not able to view their similarity score in Coursework until the grades are released.

Attach a rubric to this assignment

If you would like to use a Rubric for marking with Turnitin, select it here.
(default: No rubric)

That’s it! You don’t need to change any of the other settings. Scroll all the way down and click Save and return to course.

Once you have unhidden the dropbox, you will notice that each Coursework activity has a group restriction associated with it. For example:

Not available unless: You belong to (DO NOT EDIT) ANML6002 (202601:1) – CWS2WEEK06-1 OE (hidden otherwise)

You must not delete this restriction, as it is essential for ensuring that extensions (ISPs and Exceptional Circumstances) can be applied to the dropbox.
