Streamlining your course in Moodle

If you have course content (e.g. lengthy paragraphs of text, embedded videos, list of hyperlinks to useful websites) presented directly on the course page, this can lead to excessive scrolling and introduce clutter, which makes it difficult for students to locate the information they need. This article offers suggestions for streamlining your course page using standard Moodle features.

Put text into Pages

Consider moving text and video content from the course page to a Page resource.

Benefits:

  1. reduce scroll on your course page
  2. organise course content in a more structured manner

Use Subsections

Consider organising content into subsections

Benefits:

  1. reduce scroll on your course page
  2. expandable and collapsible subsections help learners better focus.

Put files into Folders

If you have a file-heavy course, with many presentations or word-processed documents, instead of listing them one by one, consider adding them to a Folder.

Benefits:

  1. reduce scroll on your course page
  2. organise your files into themed subfolders
  3. allow students to bulk download all the files in a subfolder

If you have a long list of links/URL resources to useful websites and videos consider adding them to a chapter of the Module Reading List instead.

Benefits:

  1. reduce scroll on your course page
  2. add a note for students under each resource
  3. set the importance level for each resource
