How do I auto-create student groups in Moodle?

To auto-create student groups:

  1. From the course page contextual navigation menus (just below the course title), click on Participants.
  2. From the drop-down menu (to the left of the ‘Enrol users’ button) select Groups.
  3. Scroll down and click on Auto-Create Groups.
  4. In the Naming scheme field type Group @ to create groups called Group A, B, C etc. or type Group # to create groups called Group 1, 2, 3 etc.
  5. In the Auto create based on field select either Number of groups or Members per group.
  6. In the Group/member count field enter the number of groups you require or number of members per group.
  7. For Group messaging select either Yes or No to allow or prevent group members to send messages to the group via the Messaging drawer on the right.
  8. Under Select members with role select Student.
  9. Under Allocate members select either Randomly or Alphabetically.
  10. Expand the ‘Grouping’ settings section; Groupings allow you to define the collection of Groups that you may want to use within a Moodle activity.
  11. In most cases, you will be creating a new Grouping (collection of groups), so set Grouping of auto-created groups to New grouping, and enter an appropriate Grouping name (for example, if these groups are being used for a group Forum then you could set the name to Forum discussion).

If you are adding the auto-generated groups to an existing grouping, then select the grouping name from the Grouping of auto-created groups drop-down list.
