What are Groupings?
In a course, you may wish to have different group configurations for different activities; for example, you may want groups of students to have discussions within their groups in a forum but want different groups of students working together on a group assignment.
In Moodle, these different group configurations are called Groupings, with each Grouping defining a different collection of groups for use in activities. When you then set up your Moodle activity to work with Groups, you will then choose which set of Groups (“Grouping”) you wish to use.
How do I set up a Grouping?
Before creating your Grouping, first create the Moodle Groups that you wish to select for inclusion in your Grouping; once this is done, follow the steps below:
- In your Moodle course, go to the ‘Participants’ page and select Groupings from the drop-down list:

- Click Create Grouping.

- Set the ‘Grouping name’ and then click on Save changes.

- Having created the Grouping, you now need to identify which Groups you want to include in the Grouping. Click on the Show groups in grouping icon:

- To add a group/groups to the grouping, you need to click on the group name in the right hand list-box (the box titled ‘Potential members’). Click on the Add button to include the Group(s) in your Grouping.
To select more than one group at a time, hold down CTRL on a PC (or Command on a Mac).

- Once you have added all the Groups that you wish to be included in your Grouping, click on the Back to groupings button:

- Your Grouping is now ready to use in a Moodle activity:
