Once a Moodle module reaches its course end date, it is worth taking a little time to carry out some routine housekeeping. A quick tidy-up helps keep your module organised, accurate, and useful for students who may still need access for revision purposes.
Here are a few key things to consider:
Review visibility of content
Module evaluation
Once you have finished collecting student feedback, consider hiding the Module Evaluation activity or adjusting the settings to stop accepting responses.
Why does this matter?
Module evaluation responses feed directly into the SMART dashboard. There is no automatic cut-off date, so evaluation data continues to be pulled from Moodle daily while the activity remains open.
Once the evaluation activity is hidden or closed:
- students can no longer submit responses
- no further data feeds into SMART
Hide redundant materials
Over the course of teaching, Moodle modules often accumulate extra content that is no longer needed or useful to students. Consider hiding:
- temporary support materials
- duplicate files or activities
- redundant activities, for example, Zoom links and appointment slots
Archive or download important data
Attendance records
Consider downloading attendance records. These records can be important when reviewing:
- student engagement
- attendance concerns
- visa compliance monitoring
Why download them?
Previously, seminar groups in past Moodle modules were removed as part of system maintenance, which affected access to historic attendance data. Although this is not expected to happen in future, downloading records provides a useful safeguard.
Course visibility
Keep the module visible to students
Moodle modules remain a valuable revision resource after teaching has ended. Students may need continued access to:
- lecture materials
- assessment submissions and feedback
- reading resources
That’s it!
