How do I set up and mark a Group work Assessment?

There are two main workflows for the collecting and marking of Group work. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, so you should choose the approach that best suits your assessment.

Workflow 1: Moodle Assignment (Group submission)

  • One student submits on behalf of the group.
  • All group members receive the same grade and feedback by default, then:
  • Marks and feedback can be adjusted for individual students.

Advantages

  • Only one submission per group
  • Default grading and feedback applied to all group members
  • Then the ability to individualise marks and feedback for students within the group

Disadvantages

  • Turnitin is not available
  • Marks must be entered/uploaded directly into Banner, or added to the Coursework activity for transfer

Workflow 2: Coursework activity (Individual submission)

  • Group mode is turned off to allow for individualised grade\feedback.
  • If a file submission is required, each student submits their own file (Typically, this will be the same version of the group work for all students, for example, the same set of PowerPoint slides).
  • Each student receives an individual grade and feedback.

Advantages

  • Grades can be transferred directly to Banner from the Coursework activity
  • Turnitin can be enabled *

* Consider whether Turnitin is necessary. The first student in a group to submit will generate a valid Similarity Report that can be reviewed by tutors. However, subsequent submissions from the same group may show a 100% similarity score, as they will match the original submission.

Disadvantages

  • If a file submission is required, each student must submit, creating a risk of incorrect or inconsistent versions being uploaded
  • Markers must assess each submission individually
