How do I add an activity, resource or subsection in Moodle?

As of Moodle 4.5 you can add activities, resources, and subsections wherever you want them to go using the ‘Add content’ plus (+) icon.

Adding an activity or resource in a section

  1. In your course homepage, turn editing on.
  2. Navigate to the specific section of your course where you would like to add an activity or resource.
  3. Click the ‘Add content’ plus (+) icon.
  4. Choose ‘Activity or resource’.
  5. This will open the Activity Chooser and you will be able to select the activity or resource type you would like to add.
  6. Once you’ve selected what you need the editor for the activity or resource will open and you will be able to edit the settings and save it.

Note: The plus (+) icon appears automatically at the bottom of each section. If you would like to add content in context you will need to hover on the dotted line where you’d like to add content and the icon will appear for you to select.

Adding a subsection

  1. In your course homepage, turn editing on.
  2. Click the ‘Add content’ plus (+) icon.
  3. Choose ‘Subsection’.
  4. The new subsection will appear after it is generated.

Adding an activity or resource in a subsection

You can only add activities and resources to subsections as further subdivision can cause confusion and overly complex hierarchies. Adding content in a subsection is mostly the same as adding activities and resources to main sections in that you can add new content in context exactly where you want it.

  1. In your course homepage, turn editing on.
  2. Navigate to the specific subsection of your course where you would like to add an activity or resource.
  3. Click ‘Add an activity or resource’.
  4. This will open the Activity Chooser and you will be able to select the activity or resource type you would like to add.
  5. Once you’ve selected what you need the editor for the activity or resource will open and you will be able to edit the settings and save it.
