How do I set up sampling of student submissions for moderation in a Coursework activity?

Please check with your Programme Lead to determine the guidelines for your programme to identify the second-marking or other moderation sampling procedures. There may already be guidance on how you should select your sample of student work for moderation. Individual submissions can be identified by using their Submission ID or their Turnitin ID.

One standard sample for moderation is to choose 10% of the submissions to second-mark or moderate. Ideally, you should choose the highest marked submission, the lowest marked submission and a range of submissions between A, B, C and D.

There are programmes that have different requirements, for example, some programmes require that all submissions given a failing mark are included in the sample, and/or that all borderline marks are included, so please check with your Programme Lead.

In a coursework activity there are options for manual or automatic sampling. This feature is used to allocate students to specific moderators or second-markers (called assessors in the Coursework activity) for the moderation or second-marking process. It is not possible to allocate individual submissions with anonymity intact. Therefore, you should not use the settings in the coursework activity for sampling if you must mark and moderate anonymously
