How do I mark a PASS/FAIL assessment in a Coursework activity?

If your assessment needs to be marked as PASS/FAIL, you first need to make sure that the gradeable component in the Banner course is set to accept a PASS/FAIL mark. If your Banner component is set to PASS/FAIL, then your summative Coursework activity will reflect that in its ‘Grade/Type’ in Settings.

If your Banner component is not set to accept a PASS/FAIL mark in the Banner course then the summative Coursework activities will be set to the default ‘Grade/Type’ which is Points based marking. The assessment will need to be given a mark out of 100.

These settings cannot be changed in the Coursework activity as the ‘Grade/Type’ settings are locked from editing to prevent errors when you use ‘Queue grades for transfer’ to upload your marks from Moodle to Banner.

Any changes to the Grade type from Points based marking to a PASS/FAIL scale need to be made in Banner and can be requested by emailing Registry – Student Records at studentrecords@brookes.ac.uk.

If your summative Coursework activities have already been deployed

If your assessment is not set-up as a PASS/FAIL grade in your deployed Coursework activities and you are going to request a change in Banner, it is important to keep the activities hidden and to not allow any submissions. After the change is made in Banner, our team will need to deploy new dropboxes with the newly adjusted grade information, which will delete any submission data.

1. First, check in Banner to make sure that your assesssment components are set to accept a PASS/FAIL mark.
2. If any changes need to be made to the Grade type in a Banner course, then contact Registry so that they can action the change in Banner.
3. Once you have confirmed that the change has been made in Banner, please raise a ticket in ServiceNow so that we can triage your request to the appropriate teams.
4. Once we have recieved the ServiceNow ticket, we will delete the summative Courseworks activities that were originally deployed.
5. After the existing (incorrect) summative Coursework activities have been deleted, the overnight syncing process will redeploy them with the newly updated Grade type.
